Smart lighting, shading, and entertainment systems introduce real points of exposure once they join a network. Many consumer-grade installations still place laptops and financial accounts on the same network as a smart thermostat or television.
Enterprise-grade networking relies on VLAN segmentation to build separate, logical paths within the same physical infrastructure. If a vulnerability is ever found in a connected device, the network carrying personal communications, security footage, and private data stays isolated from it.
Network design is no longer only about speed or coverage. Planned correctly, it is the first layer of defence for everything else a connected building depends on.
